Gelcoat and GRP Fiberglass

You may already know that Gelcoat is the material used as a final layer of your fibreglass boat. Thanks to gelcoat, the exterior of your boat is protected and has a smooth, shiny surface. Underneath the gelcoat is glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), also known as glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP). GRP or GFRP can be summarized as glass fibers bonded with thermosetting polymers such as epoxy, polyester resin, or vinylester; forming part of the structure of your boat.

As fiberglass can be shaped in almost any form, there are no design limitations. You may ask for a brand new part in your boat like a new galley shelf or a brand new bowsprit; install a new bow thruster tunnel to help you maneuver, to reinforce your stanchion or cleat bases to prevent future cracks from happening and to improve their overall hull connection strengths.

As other parts of your boat, the gelcoat layer also needs maintenance and refinishing as scratches, cracks or chipped gelcoat areas may occur on your boat. There are many reasons that cause these damages. You may have forced your stanchion too much and the base now may have a spiderweb shaped gelcoat crack due to high tension caused on the base, or your boat may have suffered a direct impact on another surface. Whatever the reason is, it needs to be treated.

We can repair any GRP, GFRP or gelcoat damage on your boat by removing the damaged area, matching the contours of the previous layers, and polishing it in order to restore the original shine and finish.
