Osmosis Treatment and Blisters

After having hauled out your boat and done all preparations needed for maintenances, you may realize some blisters on your hull or underneath the cleaned antifouling. If this is the case, than you likely are facing an osmosis problem. This phenomena happens in boats after 5 to 10 years of their manufacturing but can appear sooner as well.

Osmosis is not fatal, but it does take time and thorough investigation to understand the reasons of the blisters. Basically it is caused by water making its way through the gelcoat into the fiberglass laminates in the hull. You may notice some amount of standing water in the bilges, meaning that water goes through the laminate to the inside of the vessel.

Blisters by themselves are easy to treat, however, when you start to notice increasing numbers and sizes, and you start to see cracks in the gelcoat itself, it is already time to take action to repair the problem.

Blistering and osmosis are amongst some of the most common problems that decrease the overall value of your boat once you decide to sell her. Taking action to repair and preventing them from happening again will not only improve the resale value, but also the overall hull structure of your boat.
